At DeepL, every line of code we write takes us one step closer to building cutting-edge AI that's changing the way people communicate. Our engineers aren't just building technology; they're shaping the future of language and communication.
Azin Zahraei, DeepL Senior Software Engineer, is one of the people leading this innovation. From driving experimentation to enhancing how we build and test new features, her work ensures that DeepL continues to push the boundaries of what's possible.
We sat down with Azin to talk about her journey, the challenges she's faced, and how she's helping to create AI that makes a real impact.
Let’s start with an introduction
Hi! I'm Azin, a Senior Software Engineer here at DeepL, and I work on the Experimentation team. My job is all about building the tools that allow our teams to test new features, analyze user feedback, and make data-driven decisions. Before this, I contributed to our website, improving the DeepL Translator experience for millions of users.
I love that my work directly influences how we innovate. Here at DeepL, we're always pushing boundaries to make sure our products don't just work, but work seamlessly for people all over the world.
What excites you most about your work at DeepL?
Being at the intersection of AI and user experience. AI-driven products are still evolving, which means we’re solving problems that haven’t been solved before. It's really exciting to experiment, iterate, and refine—not just for the sake of improving a product, but because we know real people rely on our technology every day.
One project I'm especially proud of is a major improvement to our experimentation platform. We made some smart tweaks and saw a huge improvement in how well our website performed around the world. DeepL got faster and more accessible, and it's amazing to think that something I've built has made life easier for millions of people.
How does your work support DeepL’s mission of breaking down language barriers?
At DeepL, we're all about making communication better for everyone, and we put a lot of effort into experimenting with new ideas. Every time we update our user interface, improve a translation, or enhance an AI model, we make sure it's tested thoroughly to make sure it actually helps our users.
If we're making it easier for someone to express themselves in another language—whether they're a student, a business professional, or a traveler—then that's a direct impact. My job makes sure that every change we make is really valuable and improves the way people connect across languages.
How do you see your work making an impact beyond DeepL?
The way we test, validate, and improve features at DeepL is shaping best practices for AI-powered products across the tech industry. Experimentation isn’t just about making our product better; it’s about pushing the boundaries of how AI is built and used responsibly.
By refining our approach, we’re not only improving DeepL, but we’re also setting new standards for how AI solutions can be tested, deployed, and optimized in the broader world.
What keeps you motivated to continue pushing boundaries and innovating in tech?
Seeing the impact of our work in the real world. I've lived in different countries and I know from experience how frustrating language barriers can be. DeepL removes those obstacles, making communication much smoother and more natural.
But what really motivates me is our users. Hearing how DeepL has helped someone land a job, connect with family, or navigate a foreign country reminds me why our work matters. Technology solves real problems, and that's what keeps me going.
What has shaped your journey as a woman in tech?
Like many women, I’ve faced moments of self-doubt and impostor syndrome, but I’ve learned to trust my skills and experience.
One of the best things that helped me was getting to know other women in the industry. Having a network of peers who understand the challenges and can offer support and advice has been so valuable. Support and visibility matter.
How can women in tech empower each other?
Visibility and connection are everything. We need to share our stories, amplify each other’s voices, and mentor the next generation of women. Representation matters, and when we make ourselves seen, we inspire others to step up, too.
If you’re a woman in tech, I encourage you to connect, collaborate, and create spaces where others feel supported. Every time we support one another, we make the industry more inclusive for everyone.
Who has inspired you, and how do you hope to inspire others?
There’s no single person—it’s the collective strength of the women I’ve met throughout my journey.
During my Bachelor’s at the University of Tehran, I was surrounded by incredibly smart, hardworking women who pushed through every challenge. Their dedication inspired me to keep going, and I hope to pay that forward by mentoring and supporting others.
What advice would you give to other women in tech?
See your differences as strengths. It might take a bit of extra effort to carve out your own path, but that's what will make you resilient and help you stand out from the crowd.
Build connections, share your journey, and stay curious. Your perspective is uniquely valuable. Own it.
At DeepL, we believe true innovation happens when diverse perspectives come together to solve real-world challenges. If you're ready to push boundaries, work with cutting-edge AI, and make a global impact, explore our career opportunities today.
